2018 China Internet Industry Development Situation and Prosperity Index Report Unveiled at the 4th China Internet Enterprise Development Forum  

  The 4th China Internet Enterprise Development Forum was jointly held by China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and the China Institute of Communications (CIC) on the afternoon of July 10, 2018 in Beijing, where the 2018 China Internet Industry Development Situation and Prosperity Index Report was published. Wen Ku, Director General of Information and Communication Development, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) delivered a speech, and He Guili, Vice President of CAICT, and Song Tong, Deputy Secretary General of CIC, presided over the opening ceremony and the speech session respectively. More than 400 delegates attended the event, including officials from MIIT and local government departments and representatives from research institutes, industry associations, universities, and enterprises.

  The year 2018 kicks off our efforts to put all the guiding principles from the 19th CPC National Congress into action. Marking the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up, it is a crucial year for securing a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and for continuing to implement the 13th Five-Year Plan. Wen Ku recognized it is a new requirement and task to further let the Internet play an important role in improving supply quality, revitalizing the real economy, and promoting growth driver transformation. Under the wave of industrial digitalization and digital industrialization, Internet companies should seize opportunities, explore drivers, expand borders, and open up space for development. In this regard, Wen Ku put forward three suggestions: propelling the revitalization of the real economy and the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries; pursuing innovation-driven development in favor of modern economic system; and effectively fulfilling social responsibilities and ensuring network and information security.

  In the opening ceremony, Chief Engineer of CAICT, Yu Xiaohui unveiled the 2018 China Internet Industry Development Situation and Prosperity Index Report on behalf of CAICT. According to the report, Chinese Internet industry has developed rapidly, and the prosperity index has climbed to a new high, with the quarterly level reaching 103.8, 104.5, 104.9, and 105.7 in the second half of 2017 and the first half of 2018 respectively. Many factors have contributed to the rise of the Internet prosperity index. First, information consumption is flourishing as the Internet speed has exceeded 20 Mbps. Second, the Internet becomes more deeply and innovatively integrated into economic and social fields, which gives rise to hot spots such as smart retail, e-sports, and capacity sharing. Third, the industry ecosystem is reshaping fast as Internet companies have achieved positive results in international expansion through active investment and financing activities. Fourth, the cyberspace is getting cleaner, owning to initial top-level framework of the legal system for Internet industry development has taken the initial shape, and the advancing reform to streamline administration, delegate power, strengthen regulation and improve services. Professor Zhu Hongbo, Director of the CIC Committee for Internet of Things and former Vice President of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, gave a keynote speech on Information Technology Innovation and Industrial Development Strategy in the Internet of Things Era. He believes that the Internet of Things (IOT) will drive an information technology renovation from "network-centric services" to "service-centric network" and urge the information industry industry to shift its strategic focus from "information transmission" to "information service". Zhu Chunxia, Deputy Director General of Beijing Communications Administration, delivered a speech on Ushering in the New Era of Integrated Development and Continuing to Improve Internet Development in the Capital Area. Following an overview of the basic Internet development in Beijing, Zhu offered recommendations on the sound and rapid development of Internet industry in the aspects of infrastructure, network monitoring, and network security.

  In the speech session, Internet companies have conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges on digital and intelligent services, intelligent network, and smart logistics. Liu Song, Vice President of Alibaba Group, introduced Alibaba's progress in digital infrastructure, cloud computing, and intelligent product innovation through the speech on Small Promising Sectors of Intelligent Innovation. Ma Bin, Vice president of Tencent, delivered a speech on Digital Assistant in the New Era and shared Tencent's practical experience of digital application in the era of digital economy, covering livelihood governance, public health, production services, environmental protection domestic consumption, and the like. Guan Ruifeng, Deputy General Manager of Baidu Cloud, focused on IOT-driven Value Integration and talked about Baidu's IOT technology system, product development, and platform construction, as well as practices in the IOT integration with traditional industries. Sun Xiaosi, Vice President of Wangsu Technology, discussed the exploration of edge computing in the fields of video services, industrial Internet, security on the theme of Building Intelligent Network and Speeding up Universal Connection. Xu Qiang, Vice President of Jiangsu Manyun Software Technology Co., Ltd. (YMM), made a special speech on Smart Logistics to Promote High-Quality Development of the Real Economy, and said that the enterprise leads the transformation and upgrading of the traditional logistics industry by building a nationwide smart logistics platform based on technologies such as big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Wei Liurong, Director of the CAICT Institute of Policy and Economics, released the Prosperity Index and Short Videos of China's Internet Live-Streaming Industry Report. According to the report, in 2017, China's live-streaming industry has been refining with prosperity index growth for four consecutive quarters, and live streaming and short video are accelerating integration.
